Like most folks from Mississippi, Mike grew up poor in a working class family. Father and grand father were carpenters and his mother worked in a sewing factory. Mike’s mother attended college after all her kids had gotten out of high school and retired as a nurse, something Mike is extremely proud of.

As a child Mike worked as a farm laborer picking peas, cotton, loading hay and hauling water melons. He later worked in Byrd’s Supermarket in Mt. Olive. A job he though he had died and gone to heaven in that it was air conditioned. Something real important in heat of Mississippi.

Mike was the first on either side of his family to attend and graduate from college. He worked his way through school driving school buses, working at grocery stores and fast food restaurants.

Can’t tell it by his looks now, but Mike learned enough from his father to build his own home. With help from his brother and grand father Mike built the home he now lives in at the age of thirty. Mike later built other buildings around his home like a garage, pool house, and barn.

Mike believes anything in life is possible if you are willing to make the effort.
